Born in Newcastle 1914, Sylvia studied at Armstrong Collage, Durham University (1932-36) then on to Johannesburg Collage of Art 1949-52 Where she obtained a masters degree. She also studied at the Montparnasse, Paris for a time In 1939. Sylvia travelled to Buma in1940 and subsequently to India, living amongst the local people giving her the opportunity to paint them in their own envirnment in all walks of life. She returned to England for a brief period after the war Before setting off to South Africa in December 1947 where she continued to paint and also teach art. In 1963 Sylvia returned to England and made a permanent home and studio, whilst continuing to travel and pain. She was a member of the Free Painters and Sculptors Society, The National Society of Painters Sculptors and Engravers. Exhibitions Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Royal Society of British Artists, Society of Woman Artists, Letchworth Museum and Art Gallery, Art Gallery Lavenham Suffolk to name but a few.
